A useful outdoor design starts with the space it serves. The roof pattern and decorative details come after circulation, shade and the relationship to the house.
Check the footprint
Mark the proposed corners and place the furniture you expect to use. Walk around it. Think about doors, paths and the view from inside the house. These checks can reveal a problem before a drawing becomes a build.
Simple lines still need careful decisions
Beam depth, overhangs and spacing change the feel of the structure. A clean design is not automatically cheaper or easier; the details and connections still need to be resolved.
Be careful with added weight and attachments
Roof panels, screens, hanging furniture and other additions can change the demands on the structure. Do not assume they can be added later without review.
Use references as a conversation starter
