Is a Pergola Right for Your Outdoor Space?

A pergola can define an outdoor area, but it does not automatically solve every shade problem. Start with when you use the space and where the sun is at that time.

Shade is a design question

An open slatted structure behaves differently from a solid roof or a shade sail. Orientation, spacing and the time of day affect the shade on the ground. Look at the site in the afternoon as well as the morning before choosing a design.

Leave room for the way you live

Sketch the table, chairs and the space needed to pull a chair back or walk through. A structure can look generous in a photograph and still feel tight around furniture.

Plan for upkeep

Wood, coatings, hardware and nearby plants all need attention over time. Choose details you can reasonably maintain. There is no useful universal promise about temperature reduction or resale value for an individual yard.

Before getting a construction quote

Ask a qualified contractor and the local building department about the site, foundation and approval requirements. This planning page collects the related notes.
